British scientists from the University of Oxford are developing the world’s first vaccine that will prevent the development of ovarian cancer. Sky News reported this with reference to scientists.
According to scientists, the OvarianVax vaccine teaches the immune system to distinguish and “attack” tumor cells at an early stage. Women are likely to be able to get the vaccine through the UK NHS. The authors of the development also state that the goal of the vaccine is to completely eliminate the disease.
“This development would act similarly to the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine designed to prevent the development of cervical cancer,” the researchers said.
Scientists are currently studying in detail which proteins on the surface of early-stage ovarian cancer cells are best recognized by the immune system and how effectively the vaccine kills tumor models in the laboratory. Next, they plan to conduct clinical trials on healthy women, as well as women with BRCA genes that predispose them to developing hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.
