In July, a heat wave with temperatures reaching 40 Celsius destroyed most of the crops in Romania. Finally, there may be problems for sunflower and corn farmers.

If in a good year, let’s say, we harvested 2500-3000 kg from each hectare, we hope to reach 1000 kg this year. Although, judging by what we’ve seen here, we certainly won’t be able to achieve that

– Dumitru Bita, a farmer from the village of Castranova, told Euronews.

At the same time, the National Meteorological Office of Romania warns that the drought will continue.

This is a disaster. It didn’t rain… I don’t even know if I can afford the expenses

– says Julian Groza, a farmer from the village of Leu in Dolji.

In July, Romania’s Minister of Agriculture, Florin Barbu, announced that farmers would be compensated between 200 and 250 euros per hectare of damaged crops.

Romania’s national news agency Agerpres reported that the total estimated cost of drought compensation is between 500-600 million euros.

In the south of the Republic of Moldova, corn plantations suffered 70-100%, and sunflower plantations suffered 60-80% drought. This was said by Minister of Agriculture Vladimir Bolea, who asked farmers in arid areas to choose better the crops they plant. The panel of experts is due to come up with recommendations within the next two weeks on low-risk crops and varieties that will “enable the sector to cope with worsening climate change year-on-year”.
